On 19th June 2025, the world will once again come together to observe World Sickle Cell Day, a day set aside to raise awareness, show support, and stand in solidarity with millions of warriors battling Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) across the globe.
This year, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Onitsha will mark the occasion with the theme: “Tell it Loud.” The program will begin at 10:00 am at FMC Onitsha and will feature life-changing activities such as:
- Free laboratory tests
- Free medical check-ups
- Free drugs for participants
These services are not only essential for early diagnosis and treatment but also for breaking barriers to healthcare access in our community.
Why Sickle Cell Awareness Matters
Sickle Cell Disease is one of the most common genetic disorders worldwide, affecting millions of people and causing severe health challenges such as anemia, pain crises, and organ complications. Despite these struggles, many warriors live with courage, resilience, and hope.
Early diagnosis, proper medical care, and emotional support can make a world of difference in improving the quality of life for those affected. Raising awareness helps dispel myths and stigma, while encouraging preventive steps such as genetic counseling and regular check-ups.
Standing Together for Change
World Sickle Cell Day is not only about recognizing the battles of individuals but also about strengthening our collective resolve to ensure no one fights alone. By “telling it loud,” we amplify voices, spread knowledge, and empower communities to take action.
As we commemorate this day, let us honor the strength of Sickle Cell warriors, support their families, and commit ourselves to advocacy, compassion, and better healthcare access for all.
Together, we can build a future where Sickle Cell warriors thrive, not just survive.
