OUR HISTORY

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

The desire to contribute in filling the existing gap in the production of nursing manpower nation-wide, worsened by the mass exodus of the existing ones abroad for greener pastures, spurred the Archbishop of Onitsha, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke to conceive the idea of a School of Nursing as part of the expansion programme of St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha.

Briefed on the plan, the government of His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, responded positively. Funds and other logistics were put in place. On 19th December 2012, the project site for the school was blessed by the Archbishop (our proprietor) while the foundation laying-stone was done by Governor Mr. Peter Obi.

On the 9th day of May 2015, as part of the grand finale of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the hospital, the edifice housing the College of Nursing Complex was blessed by His Grace Most Rev. Valerian M. Okeke and commissioned by His Excellency, Chief Willie Madaburochukwu Obiano (Akpokue-Dike Global) the then governor of the State.
History was however made on Tuesday 14th November, 2017 during the Debriefing that followed the Accreditation visit on Monday 13th. The Secretary General Alhaji Faruk Umar Abubakar made a landmark statement unprecedented in the history of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria by verbally pronouncing that ‘the School of Nursing, St. Charles Borromeo Hospital is hereby accredited to admit students for training with immediate effect’ and to matriculate 50 students yearly. However, when the Accreditation Report from the Council came, the status of the school was raised to that of a College making it the first College of Nursing in Anambra State.
Monday, 18th December, 2017 marked a strategic milestone in the history of the College being the day the pioneer student nurses commenced academic studies in this citadel of learning.
Two years later, precisely on 4th December, 2019, Accreditation Team of four representatives from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria led by Mallam Ndagi AlHassan paid a second accreditation visit to the college. After thorough investigation and appraisal of human and material resources of the College, a Full Accreditation Status was given to the College. The Council also increased the admission quota of the students from fifty to one hundred candidates for matriculation each year.
Ever since the full accreditation status was awarded to the College, her activities have been work in progress. Through a dogged determination of staff and students, the pioneer class (Set 2017 students) was presented for the Nursing and Midwifery Council Final/Professional Qualifying Examination in November, 2020 on completing their three years academic programme. The students all came out successfully measuring 100% in the Nursing Council Examination and are registered to practice. The pioneer set had since graduated and are playing their unique roles in rendering quality care to clients, thus uplifting the health care delivery system in Anambra State in particular and Nigeria generally.

Other set of students are in their different levels of training while parents, guardians and potential nurses are earnestly seeking admission into the college as they describe here as the destination point of nursing education.
